I have owned my 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass for 21 years now, and the fact that we are both still alive is quite amazing when i think back to all the hairy moments i have had in it over the years! I bought the car off one of my mates back in February 1989 for £1200. It was a bit tatty and came in primer but essentially it was all there and what’s more there was a 455 under the hood. At first i could not believe the power of that engine, it was wheel spinning all over the place and it wasn’t until i got more serious with it in later years that I realised it was because it had a live axle. A couple of years later I had it re-sprayed in Silver with Black hood stripes, then i literally floored it around everywhere for the next 10 years without hardly ever lifting the bonnet, or my foot! Eventually that lack of maintenance and abuse led to another hairy moment when a ball joint let go on the M25, on the way to North Weald, and the front suspension collapsed. Then, a year later, that old 455 engine let go at the2000 Mopars. Also by now Surrey Muscle was in full force and i was starting to lag behind the others, funnily enough i still am! No, it was time to get with the programme and from then on the car has evolved into what it is today, a road legal 10 sec streetcar that is still driven to the racetrack and back, admittedly sometimes on the back of an AA van.
Fellow Oldsmobile owner and club member Roger Luty is more responsible than anyone for the cars current performance having rebuilt the engine, gearbox and axle over the years, and more than once. John Blay has also done a lot to the car over the years from wiring to tidying, general maintenance, and did the major prep work before it went into the A and R restorations paint shop adjacent to his own workshop in Chertsey. As for me i just drive it, though i do lift the hood occassionally to check levels and make sure nothing is about to fall off, and i don’t drive it as crazily as i did in the early days. Fact is, if it was as powerful back then as it is now we both would definitely not be around to tell the tale!
